UQ Annual Rural Management and Agribusiness Dinner: Rebecca Mickelborough (Recipient of the TopX Student Scholarship), Luke Arbuckle (Recipient of the TopX International Student Scholarship), and James Lord (TopX Board of Directors) and Marjorie Lord

University of Queensland students, Rebecca Mickelborough of Glenmorgan, QLD and Luke Arbuckle of Bungunya, Qld both received a welcome surprise when they were awarded the TopX Inaugural Scholarships for 2007 at the UQ Annual Rural Management and Agribusiness Dinner held on the 9th November.

Worth over $10000, the scholarships will be awarded annually to assist two students enrolled in the Bachelor of Agribusiness program at the University of Queensland. This degree is the benchmark Agribusiness degree in Australia and is regarded as amongst the best in the world. This probably explains why employers are lining up for these graduates.

The recipients for 2007 are, Rebecca Mickelborough who received The TopX Student Scholarships and Luke Arbuckle who was awarded the TopX International Student Exchange Scholarship, which will assist him to undertake study in at Texas A&M University, Texas.

TopX is dedicated to the development of an innovative business practises in rural Australia that foster environmental and community sustainability. This is why they identified UQ’s Bachelor of Agribusiness program as the ideal recipients for their scholarship program.

The UQ School of Natural and Rural Systems Management offers a range of programs that focus on biologically, economically and socially sustainable approaches and all the programs stress the importance of understanding the natural and rural environments and the how we impact upon them as critical for the future.

With far more jobs than graduates TopX recognised that there is no better time to commit to the scholarship program. Demand for people with agricultural and natural resources management (NRM) qualifications is expected to rise by 36 percent which equates to another 123,000 agriculture-related jobs added to the Australian economy over the next six years, according to research from the University of Sydney.

“In light of these macro challenges, we believe that over the coming decade Australia’s agriculture sector will experience an almost unquenchable thirst for graduates from a range of agricultural disciplines,” Professor Copeland - University of Sydney.
